Anthony Poon

(b. 1945 - 2006, Singapore)

Anthony Poon is one of the pioneer abstract artists in Singapore best known for his paintings in the Wave Series which he began working on in 1976. It was during that period that he abandoned the shaped canvas for a square frame, and at the same time retaining order and symmetry for an operative logic. His following works, the Frequency series (made in the early 1980s), depicted a truncated variant of a wave motif. Taking the chance, he explored the chromatic ranges in his series Colour Theory as well.
Poon developed a unique style around his interest in the relationship between line and colour, and approached it creatively by using geometrical patterns. Through his sculptures, it conveyed his meticulous ways towards precision and who he was as a person.
